On day two of our trip we stocked up on more Fruit Loops and again headed out in the rain. We headed southeast and much to our surprise... the rain let up the farther we went! By the time we arrived at Cave In Rock, it was gone! We stuck Jack back in the backpack and headed down the stairs to the cave.
We were angry to see that yet again, some total idiots had taken markers and spray paint to the rocks and written their names. If only we could have caught someone in the act! The lecture they would have gotten!!! Anyway, Cave In Rock is right along the Ohio River, we saw a huge barge go by-
The cave has had many uses in the past- all of them bad! After the Revolutionary war, bandits would lure unsuspecting travelers into the cave and then rob and even kill them! The cave was very cool- it goes back really far, and there were a ton of sparrows making their nests right into the side of the rock.
After we left the cave, we climbed up the 59 steps (I only remember that cause Jack was on my back and he was FREAKING HEAVY!!!!) and looked down through this opening into the cave below.
After Cave In Rock we headed Northwest to the Garden of the Gods. It was an AMAZING hike that included the most beautiful view I've ever seen (ok, maybe it tied with the view from the top of the 14ers we've climbed in Colorado!). I'll just post all of the pictures in a row- you'll be amazed! And don't worry... it wasn't that dangerous!
After Garden of the Gods, we stopped for one more hike at an archaelogical site. The Mississipian people inhabited that area of Illinois thousands of years ago. We climbed to the top of this bluff and saw the indentations in the land where they had their homes, a few stone encircled graves, and some pictures carved on the rocks. Well, we couldn't really see the pictures since the rocks were so moss covered, but we pretended we saw them!
Stay tuned for Chapter 3!
